Shattered by guilt over what he saw as his own culpability in his mother’s death, Kyle’s mind became warped by fear and Parallax took him as its new host. He next revealed that Kyle’s mother had been killed by Despotellis, a living virus and member of the Sinestro Corps, on orders from Sinestro himself. Sinestro and his Corps captured Kyle, as Sinestro explaining that Ion was the sentient,willpower-based counterpart of Parallax, before separating it from Kyle. However, Parallax returned in 2007’s “The Sinestro Corps War.” While serving as the ultra-powerful Lantern Ion, Kyle was traumatized by the death of his mother. As Parallax battled Earth’s heroes, Hal’s soul was eventually able to escape it and return to his body, and Hal led the Lanterns in defeating the parasite. In that miniseries, Kyle and Ganthet discovered that Parallax was the sentient embodiment of fear just as the creature reconquered Hal’s mind. When he reached Oa, he killed all the Guardians except Ganthet, his friend Kilowog and archenemy Sinestro, who the Guardians had cut a deal with to stop his deranged former student. When the Guardians of the Universe reprimanded him for this, Hal lashed out by killing a Guardian and continuing on a destructive path to Oa, on which he encountered and battled many fellow Lanterns that he left for dead, claiming their power rings for himself. Driven mad with grief, Hal sought to use his power ring to reconstruct the city and revive its people. Prior to this, Hal Jordan’s hometown of Coast City was destroyed by Mongul and Cyborg Superman in the wake of Superman’s death, with millions killed in the destructive attack. The original incarnation of Parallax was created by Ron Marz and Darryl Banks in Green Lantern #50 in 1994’s “Emerald Twilight” story. Years after Jordan was freed, Parallax found its way to Kyle Rayner, Jordan’s successor, known for keeping the legacy of the Green Lanterns alive after the Corps’ destruction.
